Effects of Depression on the Health of Human Beings

As the old adage goes, too much of something is bad. Hence, too much stress and depression can lead to bigger, more serious problems in the long run.

One of the most significant effects of depression is heart disease. In fact, depression plays a critical role in the formation of blood clots via serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter found in the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous systems of people and animals. What happens when there is a low supply of serotonin in the blood is that it causes the blood to clot, which can then lead to severe consequences for the heart. Aside from that, depression can also lead to diabetes, higher blood pressure, and worse - cancer.

On the psychological aspect, people with depression may suffer from increased nervousness and are more prone to anxiety attacks. Lack of sleep is also one of the significant effects of depression. One might also become more aloof and tends to isolate himself from other people. The feelings of hopelessness and alienation can become overwhelming, which might lead to a person wanting to commit suicide.

However, an individual suffering from clinical depression may not know or deny that he is suffering from such a condition. Oftentimes, it is already too late when the illness is discovered. Hence, the people around the person suffering from despair should immediately take action should they start to notice the symptoms. There are psychotherapists who are more than willing to help individuals cope better with their problems. One alternative treatment method is through cognitive behavioural therapy, which is a kind of psychotherapy that assists the people with stress-related issues deal with their difficulties better.
